Its been a while since I’ve shared my blogging tips with you all and its gotten to that time again where the fuel for inspiration becomes non-existent. From working a full-time job to obtaining more volunteer hours, the grind never stops. On my days off, I dedicate all my time and energy to my blog in terms of content, creativity and collaborations.It’s hard to stay motivated when it comes to creating content considering how saturated the blogging community can be. The term “blogger burnout” has knocked on my door a few times and quite often, it doesn’t even knock for its already made itself quite comfortable inside my head. It usually does a two-week stay before it gets evicted, all thanks to a new idea. But what is “blogger burnout?” Let’s define the term shall we?
Blogger Burnout (bläɡ-er, bern-out): When a person (preferbly a blogger) doesn’t have any fuel when creating content for their blog. This causes them to stare blankly into a white screen with hopes that an idea will miraculously give birth in its head.
The first step to saying #ByeFelicia to blogger burnout is coming to the realization that you are in fact, experiencing blogger burnout:
“Hi, my name is Camille, and I have no idea what to blog about!”
Looks like we are off to a good start! Below are a few methods that I personally use when being faced with blogger burnout. Hopefully these tips help you survive the heat and put that flame out for good!
Create a Schedule: When I became the seven letter word, the first thought that came to my mind was “I don’t need a planner, I’m pretty fricken organized as it is.” Boy was this girl wrong! There have been numerous occasions where the lightbulb in my head would turn on and I would run to my laptop before the light went out. No planning was involved, just random thoughts. Throughout the course of the post, I would forget the ideas associated with that post, therefore leaving me frustrated and empty-minded. Now I keep a planner at my desk and once a week, I would sit down and schedule dates to publish posts, plus brainstorm ideas for upcoming posts. Also check to see when your blog gets the most visitors and publish your posts around that same time.
Don’t Compare Yourself To Others: The most draining thing you could possibly do as a blogger is compare yourself to other bloggers. There have been multiple occurences where I am scrolling through my Instagram timeline and a local blogger has published their fourth post in the same week while I was sitting on two posts a week. Suddenly I would panic and say “I need to be more consistent like her” or “She’s blogging about this beauty product.” Everyone has their own wave and sometimes their tide can be more frequent then yours and that’s okay. Go at your own pace and remember that creativity takes time.
Learn To Say “No”: I would get so excited when opportunities would come -a-knockin for it brought more blog content and even more followers/readers. It got to the point where I was taking on too many roles and it would send me into a spiral of stress overload. It was time to make a change. I started saying no to collabs, invitations to events and to be honest, I didn’t feel bad in the slightest bit. There will be plenty more opportunities that will come knocking and sometimes, its even better to create your own (Maybe I should touch base on this more, perhaps in an upcoming post?).
Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone: Talking about outfits can be a bit of a drag sometimes. It became a weekly routine that involved dragging myself out of the house all for a few shots of my get-up. I wanted to let readers know that Style Your Life is more than a fashion blog. It can be an entirety of stylish aspects such as daily thoughts, advice and personal experience. Your blog should not only cover what you know, but also it should also cover things that you have learned along the way. Open up your mind to new ideas and don’t be afraid to address them. There’s no fun when living in a glass house, grab that stone and break free!
Take A Break: Ideas still not coming? Turn off your computer and give your mind a break. There’s only so much one can take from stating at a computer screen day and night. Go to the gym, read a book, stand on your head (not literally) or go to that yoga class you’ve been wanting to go to for the past month, or anything that involves endorphins really.
Go Out With Friends: Life’s too short to be stressing over a blog post. In relation to the previous point, turn off your computer, call up a friend and engage in social activity. Go for dinner, go out to an event or even hit up an art gallery. I find that attending events around the city help create a wider network. It allows you to be in rooms with young creatives and seeing them do what they love will inspire you to do the same, hence why I did this post. #StyleYourSocialLife
Being faced with blogger burnout is never easy for it brings feelings of non-interest and the need for inspiration becomes quite fictional. Fall in love with as many things as possible but at the same time, maintain your balance and trust your creativity.
